Record-breaking 2011 for Singapore port

Singapore's port beat several records last year, against the tide of global economic uncertainty and challenges faced by the shipping industry.

The strong growth in shipping activity cemented the Republic's position as one of the world's busiest ports, as it retained the top spot in a number of industry-wide indicators.
According to advance data announced last night by Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew, all-time highs for Singapore's port were achieved in terms of cargo and containers handled, tonnage of vessels arriving and bunker fuel sales.

The early data shows that the number of containers handled last year grew by 5.3 per cent to 29.9 million standard-sized containers, marginally exceeding 2008's record high, said Mr Lui.
In 2010, Singapore was overtaken by Shanghai as the world's busiest port in terms of containers handled. Last month, China released figures showing Shanghai handled at least 30 million containers, beating Singapore's latest figures. Vessel tonnage and bunker fuel sales also beat records set in 2010.
Total vessel arrival tonnage - which refers to the cargo-carrying capacity of ships calling here, rather than their weight - is projected to have grown 10.4 per cent to 2.12 billion gross tons last year. And sales of bunker fuel, a fuel type used by ships, are expected to have risen 5.6 per cent to 43.2 million tonnes.
In short, all these mean Singapore is right up there among the top ports of the world, holding the top spot in terms of vessel arrival tonnage and sales of bunker fuel.
Singapore is also one of the top 10 ship registries in the world. As of end-December last year, the total tonnage of ships under the Singapore flag had grown 17.6 per cent to 57.4 million gross tons.
The maritime sector plays a key role in the economy, employing more than 170,000 people and contributing 7 per cent of economic output.

Singapore top ranked friendliest country in global

Singapore has been top ranked  in a list of the world’s friendliest countries, according to a global survey of expatriates.

The HSBC Expat Explorer surveyed over 3,300 expatriates in over 100 countries. In the initial survey, SingaporeHong Kong and the United Arab Emirates came in as the top three overall scorers.

What impressed expats living in each of these countries were improved career prospects and high incomes.

However, for the annual report by Forbes magazine on the friendliest countries, the magazine isolated the survey results to the ability and success in befriending locals, learning the native language, integrating with the local community and the assimilating into the new culture.

That's when it found Singapore fell short in helping expats to feel at home with the local community. Expats living in Singapore said that they tend to hang out with fellow expats and were more likely to send their children to international boarding schools.

So which country topped the list of 31 "friendliest" countries?

New Zealand scored the highest, with expats raving about the Kiwis’ friendliness and “pitch-in-and-help” mentality that helped expats to feel welcomed.

The country’s navigable government and good healthcare system were also draws to expats.

Australia came in second, with South Africa, Canada and the United States rounding up the top five.

The least friendliest country, according to the Forbes formula, was the United Arab Emirates.

Other notable entries were the Philippines who ranked 8th, and Malaysia, who came in at No. 10.

Of the Philippines, the report said, “This country is friendly on wallets, too: 47% report an increase in access to luxuries, including domestic staff, swimming pools, and owning properties.

On Malaysia, it said, “ Many expats here say they have learned the local language and befriended locals.

Said one respondent, “Malaysia is a peaceful country. Government transactions like tax, EPF [Employees Provident Fund], are very efficient. Food is relatively cheap. Also the country is clean and green and they respect the environment.”

Marina Bay, Bayfront stations open

The move will not only reduce crowding and waiting time for bus commuters, but also provide relief to rail commuters while waiting for new train lines to be built and for new trains to arrive.

Plans to significantly ramp up the capacity of buses, including expanding their numbers and
frequency, will be announced in the coming months.

Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew said on Friday that the issues regarding the bus network are complex because the Government needs to look into how it can help the two operators grow their fleets and pool of drivers sustainably.
He was speaking to guests at the opening of two new stations on the Circle Line, Marina Bay and Bayfront.
The stations go into operation today, extending from the existing Promenade station and adding 2.4km of track to the Circle Line.
Mr Lui, who toured them on Friday, said their opening would improve the commute for those who live and work in the area.
He added that the new stations would also be a boon for visitors heading to Marina Bay for shopping, dining, entertainment or sightseeing.
Marina Bay station, with two entrances, will be an interchange between the Circle and the North-South lines.
Trains will run at a frequency of 3-1/2 minutes during peak periods and seven minutes during the off-peak.
Bayfront, with five entrances, will give commuters access to the Marina Bay Sands (MBS) integrated resort, the upcoming Gardens by the Bay and the Marina Bay Financial Centre.
Before this station opened, those going to these destinations by train had to get off at Promenade station, about 750m away from MBS, and take a bus or walk.
Mr Lui said that aside from the two major train disruptions recently, last year chalked up a number of transport milestones.
These included the opening of 12 stations of the Circle Line from Caldecott to HarbourFront in October, and the opening of a new train platform at the Jurong East station in May.
Next year, train commuters can look forward to the opening of the first phase of the Downtown Line from Bugis to Chinatown. This line will add another station to the Marina Bay area.
'It will bring us even closer to achieving our overall goal of having an MRT station within 400m on average - or a roughly five-minute walk - for all who live or work in the city and those who travel to the area for leisure,' he said.
He also gave out prizes to the winners of a competition held by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to draw out creative ideas for features at bus stops or MRT stations that would help to improve a commute.
The winning ones, picked from 667 entries, suggested:
  • A phone application to inform commuters of train arrivals and disruptions;
  • Panels with information on places of interest and eateries around stations;
  • Information at all bus stops to direct commuters to the nearest MRT station.

Hiring in Singapore will pick up!!!! in 2012

Hiring in Singapore will pick up toward end of 2012: Survey

SINGAPORE - Recruitment consultancy firm Kelly Services said it expects hiring activity in Singapore to pick up in the second half of the year.

Releasing its survey covering about 900 companies today, Kelly Services said the new hires will be supported by Singapore's growing intra-regional trade.

Sectors that could see an increase in the number of jobs include healthcare, hospitality, aeronautical, infocomms and sales.

In contrast, the manufacturing sector is expected to see a drop in recruitment activity, the survey found.

Kelly Services said that going forward, employers are likely to opt for flexible work arrangements or redeploying staff amid global economic uncertainties.

The ideal combination for companies is to have 80 per cent of their workforce as permanent staff and the rest on a flexible work scheme, said the consultancy.

However, the unemployment rate may drop if employers expect any economic slowdown to be short-lived.

Construction Management course in Singapore

Construction Demand for 2012 to Remain Strong

SINGAPORE: Despite the subdued economic backdrop, the Building and Construction Authority expects overall construction demand to remain strong, from between S$21 billion and S$27 billion for 2012.

Minister of State for National Development, Tan Chuan-Jin said although this projection is lower than the 2011 construction demand, Singapore will continue to see a high level of on-site construction activity this year. This is due to a combination of the volume of contracts awarded in the last two years and the on-going construction of major civil engineering projects such as the Downtown Line.

He said the Building Construction Authority estimates contracts worth between S$19 billion and S$27 billion will be awarded annually in 2013 and 2014.
Mr Tan was speaking at the Construction and Property Prospects 2012 seminar organised by Building Construction Authority and the Real Estate Developers Association of Singapore.

He said the healthy outlook of the construction industry over the next three years was also an excellent opportunity for the sector to enhance productivity and achieve more sustainable growth.
Mr Tan said: "The construction industry is like a huge tanker. The Government, together with the industry and the workforce, are all partners on the same ship. We will need all hands on deck to steer this tanker and working closely together to maintain an upward spiral of productivity gains to propel the industry to a higher level. Some of you have already embarked on this productivity journey and would have realised that to achieve higher productivity, we need more than just a change of hardware."

He added that the way forward is to change the mindsets across the entire organisation from CEO to site worker

Singapore MBA

The Master of Business Administration (MBA) is a master's degree in business administration, which attracts people from a wide range of academic disciplines. The MBA designation originated in the United States, emerging in the late 19th century as the country industrialized and companies sought out scientific approaches to management. The main objective of the MBA was to introduce students to the various core aspect of business management such as accounting, marketing, human resources, operations management and corporate laws etc.
The first graduate school of business in the United States was the Tuck School of Business, part of Dartmouth College. Founded in 1900, it was the first institution conferring advanced degrees (masters) in the commercial sciences, specifically, a Master of Science in Commerce degree, the forebear of the modern MBA degree. In 1908, the Graduate School of Business Administration (GSBA) at Harvard University was established; it offered the world's first MBA program, with a faculty of 15 plus 33 regular students and 47 special students. The University Of Chicago Booth School Of Business first offered working professionals the Executive MBA (EMBA) program in 1940
  • Full Time MBA programs normally take place over two academic years (i.e. approximately 18 months of term time). Classes are typically structured along semester/trimester basis and students enter take classes during weekdays like other university students at undergraduate levels. Whilst most full time MBA students possess working experience and a reasonable GMAT score, some business schools accept students without prior real-world work experience into their MBA program.
  • Accelerated MBA programs are a variation of between one or two year programs. They involve a higher course load with more intense class and examination schedules. They usually have less "down time" during the program and between semesters. For example, there is no three to four month summer break, and between semesters there might be seven to ten days off rather than three to five weeks vacation. Accelerated MBA are highly intensive programs and academically challenging.
  • Part-time MBA programs normally hold classes on weekday evenings, after normal working hours, or on weekends. Part-time programs normally last between one to three years. The students in these programs typically consist of working professionals, who take a more structured programs where classes are conducted over weekends or weekdays evening. Part-time MBA is the most popular options for most working professionals.
  • Executive MBA (EMBA) programs developed to meet the educational needs of managers and executives, allowing students to earn an MBA or another business-related graduate degree in two years or less while working full time. Participants come from every type and size of organization – profit, nonprofit, government — representing a variety of industries. EMBA students typically have a higher level of work experience, often 10 years or more, compared to other MBA students. In response to the increasing number of EMBA programs offered, The Executive MBA Council was formed in 1981 to advance executive education.
  • Distance Learning MBA programs hold class’s off-campus. These programs can be offered in a number of different formats: correspondence courses by postal mail or email, non-interactive broadcast video, pre-recorded video, live teleconference or videoconference, offline or online computer courses. Many schools offer these programs.
  • MBA with Concentration Students in some MBA programs have the option to select an area of concentration and focus approximately one-third of their studies in this subject. Accreditation bodies exist specifically for MBA programs to ensure consistency and quality of graduate business education, and business schools in many countries offer MBA programs tailored to full-time, part-time, executive, and distance learning students, with specialized concentrations
  • Dual MBA programs combine MBA degree with others (such as an MS or a J.D., etc.) to let students cut costs (dual programs usually cost less than pursuing 2 degrees separately), save time on education and to tailor the business education courses to their needs. Some business schools offer programs in which students can earn both a bachelor's degree in business administration and an MBA in four or five years.
