SINGAPORE:
There will be an estimated 1,400 jobs in childcare services created in
the next three years is due to the development of more childcare centres.
Acting
Minister for Community Development Youth and Sports Chan Chun Sing said this at
the launch of the Inaugural Early Childhood Care and Education Fair.
To cope with
higher demand for childcare professionals, the Workforce Development Agency
(WDA), which organised the fair, also launched a new initiative in childcare
services on Saturday.
The WSQ
Mentoring programme, which was launched on Saturday, is meant for Principals
and Senior Teachers to implement a better support system for teachers to be
mentored.
The WDA’s
scholarship offerings were also expanded. There are now 16 scholarships made
available by WDA.
Earlier this
year, Major—General Chan had asked for ideas on his Facebook on how to better
attracts Singaporeans to the sector.
Career
progression and professional development were some of the suggestions offered.
MG Chan said:
"There were also creative new ideas raised regarding tapping a wider pool
of candidates, such as stay—at—home mothers and even grandparents, to join the
sector as teacher assistants. MCYS is working with various stakeholders,
including WDA, to review the manpower supply for the childcare sector."
